Explore a part of Kissamos, the westernmost province of Crete in a relaxed day tour
that won’t require an early wake up and will also allow you to be back for your stroll
around the old town and harbour in the late afternoon.
We will enjoy a swim at the
sandy beach of Falasarna, one of the most impressive in all of Greece.
We then head
inland to visit the picturesque hilltop village of Polirrinia. In the village and the
nearby citadel there are remains from antiquity to Byzantine times, such as Roman
waterworks and Venetian fortifications. We will wander around the village and walk
up a dirt track, passing Hellenistic cave-dwellings, to the church of the 99 Martyrs,
who ‘rescued’ Christianity during the Saracen-Arab occupation.
From here we will head
up to the castle, with its cisterns, walls and stunning views; the coast one way,
the Sirikari gorge and the White Mountains the other. A fresh, light lunch will follow,
at a typical family run taverna before our return journey back to the hotel.
Participants are encouraged to bring the following:
